Macbook Pro/Nvidia issue/No support from Apple :-(
digitalfrog op 22 februari 2011 #
Many of you know about the Nvidia issue with some late 2007/early 2008 laptops as described here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2377
I had issues with my early 2008 MBP that had video issues, then a day later refused to even boot.
I dropped it a the iCenter in Haarlem for evaulation and their initial conclusion was that the issue was not related to Nvidia and therefore quoted me 700 euros for a new logic board. I replied and argumented that indeed I felt the video went bezerk, leading to the rest of the logicboard to fail. Therefore I should be entitled to a free repair.
The last reply was that they can't say if the Nvidia card works or not as their test won't run with a dead logicboard, therefore I still should pay for the repair. (so how could they conclude before that it was not an Nvidia issue ??!!)
I find it outrageous as it I feel I should not have to pay for a logicboard just because Apple is unable to detect the source of the initial problem.
I realize it's my word against theirs, but as customer I should not have to be the one proving it's an Nvidia issue !
Has anyone else been through the same issue where the mainboard eventually died and got theirs replaced for free ?
I realize that iCenter maybe stuck between me an Apple, and even though I don't like the current conclusion, they were open to discuss.

LOL. Meneer wil Apple aan de schandpaal nagelen, maar is te lui om twee versies van zijn epistel te maken, gok ik.

@stavos: I deeply apologize for been unable to write this message in Dutch. I would if I could. I still feel others maybe in a similar situation in the future and may benefit from answers - would they be in Dutch or not.

Hi Ralph, i assume you know you're on a dutch forum where we all tend to speak and write dutch. I'll also assume english is your mother tongue, so i'll do my best.
First of all a little stuff about warranty, which is provided by Apple for only one year (nasty napes). In the Netherlands there is a one year warranty as well, but European guidelines tell us to provide at least two years of warranty. Lots of companies provide that (buy a mac at BCC, Mediamarket and you'll get two years of warranty). That being said it's only logical (and according to law) that you are the one who needs to prove what is wrong with your machine, you've owned it for three years after all. Only if it's less than six months old you can assume the problem was already there and they cannot make you prove the problem.
Anyway, since your MBP is already three years old there is no way you can get to them through normal warranty. Thus, you'll have to resort to another possibility.
If you are certain about your MBP being affected by the problem mentioned in the knowledge base, contact Apple directly. Tell them you already visited iCentre, but they weren't able to help you and also tell me explicitly that they cannot test for the problem since they are refusing to do that. Add in the language barrier, it might help Apple understand the problem and persuade them to be a little more easy going. Tell them that is why you are contacted Apple directly now. Ask them kindly to help you out with your problem and that you are certain about the issue with your graphics card. Also let them know that you didn't expect this at all from such an expensive notebook and you are disappointed about it. Ask the Apple contact to connect you with their superior if they cannot find a solution. Do this all in a very polite manner, it will give you the best chances.
I am unsure whether the faulty graphics card can ruin your logic board, but you can always try and it might get you a little further then where you are now. If it all fails, ask them to split the costs.
Good luck.
p.s. just trying to help out, i didn't have the mbp in question so i didn't have the problem you described or asked about

Een defect logicboard is wat ze aangeven, dan is het inderdaad niet na te gaan of de videokaart ook stuk is. Vrvelend maar logisch dat dat niet onder de extended warranty van Apple op de nVidia issues valt.

Hello there,
Hope you Dutchies don't mind me junping in and ading a few more words in english just so that I can help digitalfrog on his worries as I have walked the same path and survived.
Here it goes:
ICenter Suc.. like SH..!! they are great, if you bought your machine in their store, then they will do everything for you, and if you are able to speak Dutch, otherwise you are treated like a nobody.
I had a terrible experience with I center as you can notice ending on a one month long story, finally resolved 2 weeks ago after my last visit there (Icenter) just grabbed everything macbookpro17" and all my papers and went to the Machouse in Raadhuisstrat where my macbook was tested positive for the Nvidia Issue after 30 minutes being there. It took them 30 minutes to detect the problem and 1 week to get my machine back. WHAT A SERVICE!!! thats what i call a SERVICE!
What i am about to say here any expert, any technitian on mac's Know's it for sure: way to detect the Nvidia issue is if your mac went black on you, it wont wake up and led light is constantly on. It starts up, you ear the hard disk running and the start up sound but screen is totaly black most important is led light constantly on. these are the signs.
Just so that apple sends the part for free the test they run need to give the nvidia issue result and code. otherwise no way.
things you should check is if the ram memories are fully operational and not defective as they will interfere with the nvidia test and if the guys in Icenter do not know this is because they are not qualified at all.
My advices: always ask for a second opinion.
and go to different authorized resellers.
If none of them succeeds detecting the nvidia issue and the symptoms are the ones described consider having to pay a little. and have it fixed on independent mac experts where they will only charge you for the work and time they spent with your machine.
Good Luck! and fight till the last minute!

reaction to Stavos and passenger.
Maybe you didn't notice: this is a dutch forum with an english name One More Thing. whereas when using the google translate tool I get: one more thing = nog een ding
It gives you something to think doesn't it! I think your pretentiousness is hilarious I have to say.

One last thing digitalfrog,
In last case you can apply to the Dutch consumer law if your machine was bought in the Netherlands (and this is information that not even all dutch citizens know); check this:
http://www.consumenteninformatiepunt.nl/page/en/consumer-rights/consumentenrecht.
http://www.consumenteninformatiepunt.nl/page/en/themes/Kopen-in-de-EU
The period of 2 years is a minimum requirement which every EU Member State must comply with. However, under Dutch legislation it is assumed that you are entitled to a longer period of compliance with the requirements of proper performance in the case of products with a longer expected useful life (washing machines, cars and other durable goods). The Netherlands therefore offers consumers (including those from abroad) more far-reaching protection than is required by the European Directive. However, this does not mean that you are entitled to repair free of charge in all cases after a period of 2 years. You must take into account the age of the purchased item in relation to its expected useful life and normal depreciation for age and wear and tear.
Good luck again!

Dus Microfix bedankt!
Klasse. Ik ga daar voortaan mijn Apple spullen halen etc.

@Mariu2u,
Forget Icentre, they don't know anything(not to say a worse word) about Macs. I had same problem was for one month back and forward with my macbook pro until one time i got a not nice answer from them, immediately demanded my mac back and filed a complaint. Brought it to the machouse and in 30 minutes got my mac diagnosed as the nvidia issue and fixed free of charge as it is a recognized issue by apple.
My dutch is still not good enough to write it,
All the best
